How to Spawn a Wither in Minecraft

12/22/2013

The Wither is the second boss monster to be added to Minecraft. It can be created by the player in much the same way as an iron golem except using soul sand and wither skeleton skulls instead.

Edit Steps

  1. Gather your materials. You will need 3 wither skeleton skulls and 4 blocks of soul sand.

    • Both can be found in the nether.

    • Wither skeleton skulls are only rarely dropped by wither skeletons, found in nether fortresses.

  2. Find an area in which you want to fight the Wither and do not have anything you don’t want destroyed.

  3. Create a T out of soul sand by placing 1 block on the ground and then 3 across the top.

  4. Place the 3 wither skeleton skulls on top of the soul sand T.

  5. Be aware that when the last skull is placed the Wither will appear with a blue glow. It is invulnerable at this stage. When it finishes this charge, it explodes.

  6. Prepare to defend yourself. The Wither will then begin to attack all non-undead creatures around it. Good luck!

Edit Tips

  • The Wither can “poison” a player with a status called Wither. It makes your health bar black, so it can be very difficult to tell how much health you have left.

  • You must assemble the Wither yourself. You can’t use pistons, and a skull must be the last thing you place.

  • If the Wither fails to spawn, make sure you are on a difficulty other than peaceful.

  • The Wither is very difficult to kill, but can be easier with plenty of extra targets around to distract it from you. It is helpful to spawn snow golems as a distraction.
