How to Configure Profile Manager in OS X Mavericks Server App 3.X

Now that you have set up your Server and configured Open Directory, you are ready to start managing your devices on the network with Profile Manager. Profile Manager allows you to configure settings on your devices from a central location so that you do not have to configure each individual device. Continue at step 1 if you are ready to start.

EditConfigure and Start Service



  1. Open from Launch Pad.


  2. Click on located in the left pane of the window.


  3. Configure by clicking on the Configure button.


    • Read the overview and click the button when finished.


    • Enter your organizations information and click the button when finished.


    • Choose the certificate that you would like to use and click the button when finished. NOTE: If you produced a certificate yourself, you will receive a warning that it is not signed by a trusted certificate authority.


    • Enter your Apple ID and password to obtain a push certificate from Apple and click the button when finished.


    • Wait for service to finish setting up and click the button when done.




  4. Enable the ability to 'Enroll devices using the Device Enrollment Program'. You will have to register your domain on Apple's Deployment Program website before you can continue. If you are running the server out of your home, this feature is not needed.


  5. Enable the ability 'Distribute apps and books from the Volume Purchase Program'. This feature is not needed if you are running the server out of your home.


  6. Choose your default configuration profiles by clicking on the button.


    • Name the profile, check the box if you would like to include services that have been configured, and click the button when finished.




  7. Enable by clicking the button.


    • Choose the certificate that you would like to use from the drop down menu and click when finished.




  8. Turn on the Profile Manager service by click on the switch in the upper left hand corner of the window.



EditConfigure Profiles for Your Devices



  1. With the Server App open and Profile Manager selected, you can get to the configuration area by two different means.

    • Open Safari and type in the following: http://ift.tt/1ppvDyj

    • Clicking the arrow next to near the bottom of the window.




  2. Enter an authorized users credentials that has administrative privileges.


  3. To start configuring the settings by Group, Users, Devices, or Device Groups. Click on the desired choice. Suggestion is to do this by Group.

  4. Click on the Group, User, Device, or Device group that you wish to start editing.

  5. Click on the tab and click the button.


  6. Go through the list and start entering your desired configurations then click button when finished.


  7. Click so that the settings will be pushed to the User, Group, Device, or Device Group.

  8. Repeat for each User, Group, Device, or Device Group.


EditEnroll Devices



  1. Open the enrollment site (i.e. http://ift.tt/1iI2dg3) on the device that you wish to enroll.

  2. Log in with the user's credentials that the device will belong to.


  3. Click on the tab


    • Download and install both Profiles starting with the certificate.



  4. Click on the tab.


  5. Click the button and install the Remote Management Profile.


  6. Your device is now enrolled and will automatically receive profiles that are associated with the user.

  • If you would like access to the Profile Manager from outside the network, you will have to forward the following ports to the server. TCP Ports 80, 443, and 1640.
