How to Make Mint Lip Balm in the Microwave

3/20/2014

Mint is a great flavor for lip balm, as it's refreshing, cooling and tasty. A simple lip balm containing mint can be made at home with just a few simple materials. Provided you have a microwave, it won't take you long at all.

EditIngredients

  • 2-3 level dessert or soup spoons of Vaseline

  • 1/2 teaspoon sweet almond oil

  • 1 teaspoon honey

  • 4-7 drops peppermint or mint essence/extract (edible)

EditSteps

  1. Put about two to three spoonfuls of Vaseline in your microwave safe bowl. Put the bowl in the microwave. Heat the bowl until the Vaseline has completely turned into liquid.

    • Handle the hot bowl and liquid with care.

  2. Add the sweet almond oil and honey to the liquid. Also add about five to seven drops of your peppermint essence or extract (adjust as needed for flavor).

  3. Mix everything together with a mixing stick or spoon. Return to the microwave and melt for twenty more seconds.

  4. Mix again. When mixed, pour the liquid solution into the lip balm container.

    • You might find it helps to use a small funnel to direct the liquid if the balm container has a narrow mouth.

  5. Leave the lip balm at room temperature to set for one hour. To speed up the process, you could put it in the fridge for half an hour.

  6. Once the lip balm has hardened, it's ready for use. Simply rub your finger in it and apply all over your lips.

    • Label and date the container. Don't keep the lip balm for over six weeks. It will go moldy and/or harbor germs. It is also a good idea to keep it refrigerated when it's at home.

EditTips

  • Instead of sweet almond oil you could use olive oil or coconut oil (melted).

  • Make lots of these with different essences and give them to friends for their birthday.

  • Apply this lip balm once daily, or on top of some lipstick.

  • Why not add a small sticker on top of the lid of your lip balm container, to add a finishing touch?

EditWarnings

  • Be careful when taking the bowl out of the microwave - it could be hot - especially if it's plastic.
