How to Make a Scissors Case

2/23/2014

A scissors case is an excellent way to keep the sharp scissor blades safe. The case prevents accidental poking and the blades won't rub against anything else in storage. Perfect for stashing inside your sewing basket, craft box or multi-purpose drawer, scissors inside a scissor case are also easy to find. This scissors case can be embroidered to make it fancier, or left plain if preferred.

Edit Steps

Edit Part 1: Making the pattern

  1. Make the pattern. Trace around the scissors onto paper to form the template. The design should allow for an additional 0.5cm allowance around the scissors shape. Cut out the paper pattern.

  2. Cut out the pattern on the actual felt. You'll need 2 pieces, for front and back. As you cut, leave another 0.5cm seam allowance around the design.

Edit Part 2: Designing the scissors case

This part is optional but it's easy and does add an interesting element to the overall design.

  1. Outline the cut felt. On what will form the "top" side of the felt, draw the appearance of your scissors on the felt with tailor's chalk. See the image for guidance. This design will later be embroidered.

  2. Embroider the outlined scissors pattern with running stitch. Choose a thread color that complements the fabric nicely.

Edit Part 3: Adding lining

  1. Add cotton lining to the scissors case. Cut out two pieces of cotton lining 2mm smaller than the felt fabric pieces.

  2. Glue the back of one lining piece to the back of one felt piece. Repeat for the other lining piece on the remaining back felt piece. This lining will keep the scissors from catching on the felt when slipped in and out.

Edit Part 4: Assembling the case and decorating

  1. Sew the scissors case together.

    • Lay the two pieces of cut felt together, attached lining sides facing each other (inward).

    • Sew along the edges and base of the scissors case. Do not sew the top; this is where the scissors are pushed in and pulled out from.

    • The scissors case is now formed.

  2. Finished. Check that your scissors fit snugly and it's all set to use.
