Create your own candle inside a mason jar to provide a protective covering for the candle for outdoor use or just to throw a pretty, enclosed glow. These make great gifts for friends and family who enjoy scented candles.
Edit Steps
Preparing the Wick
- Smooth out the wick to make it straight.
- Hold the top of the wick with a pen or something similar. Make sure the bottom of the wick reaches the bottom of the jar and is in the center.
Making the Candle
- Turn the stove burner to the lowest setting. Place the pouring pot on the burner.
- Add the wax flakes to the pot. Stir constantly. The wax should melt but not bubble or simmer.
- Continue stirring until the wax is almost completely melted.
- Pour the scented oil and color to the melted wax flakes.
- Slowly add color until the ultimate shade/hue is achieved. Adding color too quickly may create a more vibrant color than desired.
- Stir until the color and scented oil are fully integrated into the melted wax.
- Pour the wax into the mason jar. Pour the candle wax once it reaches a smooth consistency. The consistency should mirror a well-blended smoothie.
- It may take up to 20 to 30 minutes to achieve this consistency.
- Allow to set. The candle is ready to use when it turns solid.
Using the Candles
- Place the jar candles wherever you need protected candlelight. The candles work well outdoors, such as at the beach or on your outdoor table setting.
- These candles look wonderful lining a walkway.
Edit Tips
- When the candle gets lower in the jar, use a long match or lighter to light it.
- Clean the pouring pot by placing it over the stovetop burner on low. Allow any residual candle wax to melt and then wipe clean with a paper towel.
- Trim the wick ½”/1cm before lighting.
- The candles may take up to 24 hours to completely cool. Wait at least 24 hours before lighting.
Edit Warnings
- Never leave candles unattended. Extinguish candles if nobody is present to keep an eye on them.
- If using outdoors, keep away from flammable and dry bush, grass and leaves. Use in clear, graveled, damp or cemented areas only.
- If using in the bathroom, bear in mind that dropped glass tends to shatter when it hits tiles and other hard surfaces.
