How to Make an Origami Lamp

12/25/2013

Origami lamps are a simple yet beautiful way to produce illuminated party decorations. They're easy to make and when combined with the energy efficient and low-heat emitting LED lights, they're a safe way to decorate your party. If you enjoy doing origami, this project will be a simple one for you. And if you've make enough origami lamps, you'll even be able to string them together to form a beautiful chain of lights.

Edit Steps

Part 1: Making the Origami Lamps

  1. Make sure the piece of paper you're working with is perfectly square. Fold one edge of rectangular paper so that it matches the adjacent edge (edge next to it). Cut off the part of the paper that is not covered. The square sheet of paper now has one diagonal fold.

  2. Fold the paper so that the other opposite corners match. You will now have two crossing diagonal folds.

  3. Turn the paper around. Fold it half way through twice, once in the vertical axis and once in the horizontal axis.

  4. Tuck the vertical and horizontal folds in. Fold the paper, leaving a triangle.

  5. Fold both lower edges of the triangle in to the middle.

  6. Repeat on the opposite side. Now the paper will have a square shape.

  7. Fold the loose corners in to the middle of the square.

  8. Repeat on the opposite side.

  9. See that one side of the folded in corners will have two loose corners. Fold these corners into the gap of the corners you folded in on the previous step.

  10. Repeat on the opposite side.

Part 2: Inserting the Light into the Lamp

  1. Find the opening on the side with no loose corners.

  2. Blow in the opening to inflate.

  3. Put one diode of the light chain through the opening. Repeat for each lamp to form a chain (if relevant).

Edit Tips

  • If the opening is to big so that the diode falls out, you can use some tape to stick it to the origami.

  • If you use colored paper, you can personalize your creation.

Edit Things You'll Need

  • Light chain

  • A regular sized sheet of paper (in Europe A4 format) of the color you prefer or a square sized sheet of paper
