How to Make Lipstick Out of Crayons

Believe it or not, one of the best ways to get new lipstick is by making it using crayons. It is an easy way to recycle old crayons you or your children no longer use. Also, while many name-brand lipsticks contain a wide array of chemicals, lipsticks made by crayons are completely non-toxic and 100% safe, and you know exactly what goes on your lips and who it has been handled by. Plus, making your own lipstick can be lots of fun, is completely free, and the shades you produce are 100% customized to your liking.

Part 1: Preparing the Crayons



  1. Remove the paper from the crayons you wish you use.





    • You may wish to cut off any part of the crayon that was not covered by paper, as these parts may have germs or bacteria on them.

    • Note that if you keep all of your crayons together, exposed parts may have been tainted with other colors. Check carefully before using.





Part 2: Melting the Crayons



  1. Turn a single burner on your stove to high heat.





  2. Fill the saucepan one-half full with water. If you would like, add a pinch of salt to the water to make it boil faster.





  3. Place the saucepan on the hot stove burner. Wait for the water to boil.





  4. Once the water in the saucepan is boiling, turn the heat on the burner down to low-medium.





  5. Place the metal mixing bowl on top of the boiling saucepan. Be sure that the water does not touch the mixing bowl. If it does, pour out some of the water until you can place the bowl on the saucepan without it touching. This will serve as a makeshift double burner.





    • If you have a double burner, feel free to use it.



  6. Place a single crayon in the double-burner. This should be your "base shade", a red or pink that you would like to be the base of your lipstick shade.





  7. Add more crayons as you wish. You may wish to use half crayons, or even tiny pieces. Don't be afraid to add colors that are out of the norm, such as blue or yellow.





    • Colors like maroon can be used to darken the shade, while peaches and nudes will make the shade less intense.



  8. Use the fork to stir the crayons as they melt. Stir continuously as they melt.





  9. Turn the burner to a low setting.







Part 3: Adding Other Ingredients



  1. Stir in the petroleum jelly or shea butter with a fork. Stir until all ingredients are completely melted and mixed together.





    • The more petroleum jelly or shea butter you use, the easier it will be to apply your new lipstick.



  2. Take the mixture off the heat. When all ingredients are melted and combined, use oven mitts or a dish towel to remove the mixing bowl from the saucepan.







Part 4: Shaping the Lipstick



  1. Pour the new lipstick directly into the empty tube or container. Use a knife or your fingers to shape it.





  2. Once the new lipstick has cooled slightly, place the container in the refrigerator. Give the lipstick a few hours to solidify.





  3. Remove the lipstick from the fridge after 3-8 hours.





  4. Try it on.

The following amounts is for a basic 0.15 ounce lipstick container or tub:



  • 1/2 non-toxic crayon in color of your choice

  • 1/2 teaspoon jojoba oil

  • 1 almond-sized chunk (2 grams) shea butter

  • A saucepan

  • A small metal mixing bowl

  • A refrigerator

  • A stove

  • Water

  • An empty lipstick tube or other small container

  • A fork

  • Salt (optional)
